Allergies

Allergy Diagnosis and treatment are complex. Drs. Queen and Jacobson offer fellowship training and Dr. Bacon offers post graduate ongoing education in allergy care.

Ear, Nose and Throat doctors offer a different approach to allergy treatment than general allergists. They follow guidelines established by their academy, the AAOA (American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergists). More times than not, allergies affect areas of the Ear, Nose and Throat. Doctors trained in this specialty can approach symptoms on several levels and they can establish if other, physical problems contribute to the severity of the condition.

Children and Allergies

Needles are often scary for children. Our doctors offer allergy testing under anesthesia if the child needs to have surgery related to tonsils or adenoids.

Our AAOA trained allergy staff will make your testing experience pleasant and informative…

Once we have established what items cause allergies, we mix a cocktail called “serum”. This serum is different for each patient and can consist of many ingredients.

Patients come on a walk in basis for their allergy shots which will help them build immunity.

We follow our patients often for several years and get to share in the success of their treatment and their joy in improved quality of life. Children and adults alike are able to hug their pets again and play outside without major restrictions. Call for an updated shot hour schedule, or subscribe to our mailing list to receive e-mails in case of shot schedule changes.

Our shot hours are convenient with early mornings and late nights on a walk in basis - no appointment necessary, ever. Call for an updated shot hour schedule.

Patient Testimonials - back to top

Our family was enormously blessed when Dr. Queen was referred to us by our daughters pediatrician because of her medical condition. Kaleela was two years old at that time. Before I tell you how wonderful Dr. Queen and his staff have been to our family, I need to let you know that before meeting Dr. Queen Kaleela was receiving therapy for food aversion, speech and physical therapy. She had been seen several times for ear infections and reflux and she had been screened for cognitive and social development by therapists and found to be developmentally delayed. My husband and I were desperate for help when we called Dr. Queen's office for an appointment. Right from the start Dr. Queen and his staff are absolutely wonderful. Dr. Queen took the time to listen to us and immediately started a plan of action to help our daughter. I can tell you that Dr. Queen can get to the root of a problem and fix it. We felt for the first time that there was hope. Dr. Queen scheduled Kaleela for surgery. I will never forget coming into the recovery room and Kaleela raised her arms and said clearly "Mommy, Daddy". I cried because until then her speech was a lot of utterances and sounds with a few words mixed in and you had to listen really hard to hear a word. Kaleela has been a Patient of Dr. Queens for five years and he has performed two surgeries on Kaleela during this time. Currently, she is being treated for food and environmental allergies. Kaleela is an honor roll student and going into the third grade. Her diagnosis as being developmentally delayed has been dropped. She is kept busy taking care of her dog, parrot, two frogs, hermit crab, caterpillars, butterflies, and fish. But more than that, Kaleela can enjoy a meal with her family and talk about anything. Thank you Dr. Queen for all you have done and continue to do for our family!

I suffered from allergy symptoms my entire life, except for about a year when I moved from Kentucky to Virginia. Then I realized that I just have a system that is very susceptible to many allergens. My reactions were never severe, just persistent. No asthma or shortness of breath, just constant post nasal drip and stuffiness. I kinda knew there more effective treatment options other than over-the-counter pills. But because I had lived with the symptoms so long and had never associated with or been influenced by someone that received allergy treatments, I didn't bother to research it or follow my GP's advice. I was convinced that was just the way it was going to be and learned to ignore it. My wife had other ideas. I hadn't considered the effects of my condition on those around me. The constant throat clearing, restless sleep, yearly sinus infection, and snoring can be a real nuisance in a relationship. She knew that there were ways to more effectively treat or eliminate my symptoms, so she encouraged me to talk to my GP about it. My most immediate concern was to determine if I had sleep apnea. My GP referred me to a sleep center where I was diagnosed as having sleep hypopnea - abnormally slow and shallow breathing. Not quite as severe as sleep apnea, but enough to cause concern. My GP next referred me to HROA where Dr Queen explained both non-surgical and surgical options. Surgery isn't for everyone, but I decided to undergo UPPP surgery to because it was a one-time permanent solution (compared to sleeping with a positive air pressure device or palate-supporting mouthpiece) and it would minimize future infections of my tonsils and adenoids. And I did get a second opinion that confirmed that I was a good candidate for UPPP and was likely to get good results. They were right! For the last 3 years I sleep more soundly, my snoring has disappeared, and I have not had one sinus infection.

I still suffered from post nasal drip and stuffiness, so Dr Queen next had me undergo allergy screening. I'm allergic to everything! And very sensitive to small amounts, although my reaction is no more than a runny nose and congestion. I now take weekly allergy shots and daily food drops, with the hope of eventually being weaned off them as I build my immunity. It's amazing how the mind works, in that I had come to accept my symptoms. But now that they are gone, I realize how aggravating those symptoms were, both to me and those around me. What a difference!
